Raid on Aden Al-Ghad: WJWC Condemns Arrest of Editor

Raid on Aden Al-Ghad: WJWC Condemns Arrest of Editor

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) expresses its deep concern over the storming of the Aden Al-Ghad newspaper headquarters on Saturday morning, September 27, 2025, and the arrest of its editor-in-chief, journalist Fathi Bin Lazraq, who was released later the same evening.

According to information obtained by WJWC, armed elements affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC) raided the newspaper’s offices in the Kabota area of Mansoura District, Aden Governorate. During the raid, the assailants forcibly expelled the staff at gunpoint, sealed the premises, and detained the editor-in-chief.

WJWC strongly condemns this assault, holding the Southern Transitional Council fully responsible for the incident. The organization considers it a blatant violation of press freedom and a dangerous escalation against independent media in Yemen, which is already experiencing its worst crisis since the country’s unification in 1990 and the adoption of political pluralism.

The organization calls on the internationally recognized government to immediately assume its constitutional and legal responsibilities by halting all unlawful measures against Aden Al-Ghad, reopening the newspaper without delay, and ensuring accountability for all individuals and entities involved in the violations.

Furthermore, WJWC stresses the urgent need to guarantee a safe environment for journalistic work in Yemen. All attacks on press freedoms must cease, and perpetrators of violations targeting journalists must be held to account.

WJWC also appeals to international human rights and press freedom organizations to strongly condemn this attack and to exert all possible pressure on local authorities and the internationally recognized government to end arbitrary actions against Aden Al-Ghad and its staff, safeguarding the rights and safety of journalists across Yemen.
