Saudi Authorities Arrest Yemeni Journalist at Jeddah Airport

Saudi authorities have arrested Yemeni journalist Mujahid al-Haiqi at Jeddah International Airport without providing reasons for his detention, according to Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC).

The organization said al-Haiqi was taken into custody on August 12, 2025, while traveling with his mother to Cairo after completing Umrah. The family was heading to visit his father, who is receiving medical treatment in Egypt. Instead of being allowed to board his flight, al-Haiqi was ordered to report to a security center, after which he was transferred to an unknown location. His home was later searched by Saudi authorities.

Relatives told WJWC that al-Haiqi had no criminal record during his short stay in Saudi Arabia. The group believes his arrest is linked to his journalistic work in Yemen’s Hadramawt governorate.

WJWC described the detention as an arbitrary measure and a violation of international law, citing Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees freedom of movement, and Article 19, which upholds freedom of opinion and expression.

The organization called on Saudi authorities to release al-Haiqi immediately and unconditionally, disclose his whereabouts, and ensure him access to legal counsel and protection from ill-treatment. It also urged the Yemeni government to take urgent steps to secure his release and safeguard the rights of Yemeni citizens abroad.

“Targeting journalists and human rights defenders is a grave violation of international law,” WJWC said. “Fundamental rights and freedoms cannot be compromised.”
