Karman Urges Greater International Backing for Somalia’s Peace and Development

Mogadishu – Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman has called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to step up support for peace, stability, and development efforts in Somalia, describing assistance to the country as a pressing humanitarian duty.

Speaking at the end of her visit to Mogadishu, the Yemeni human rights advocate stressed that Somalia is at a critical stage where international solidarity is essential. She highlighted education and sustainable development as vital pillars for long-term stability, while also recognizing the central role of Somali women in advancing political and social progress.

Karman said she was deeply moved by the hospitality she received during her stay, reaffirming her solidarity with the Somali people and their aspirations for a more secure future.

During her humanitarian tour, Karman held meetings with Somali government officials, women leaders, and members of parliament. Discussions centered on strengthening women’s participation in political life and their role in promoting peace and reconciliation.

She also visited educational and social centers that provide care for orphans and girls, reviewing programs focused on schooling, psychological rehabilitation, and community support. Karman praised local initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for youth, noting that such projects are crucial for Somalia’s stability and sustainable development.

Karman concluded her visit by underscoring her core message: the need to draw greater international attention to Somalia’s challenges and to mobilize stronger global support for the country’s resilience and recovery.
