Shocking allegations of abuse inside Yemen’s Political Security Branch in Marib Governorate have surfaced following testimony from former detainee Manea Suleiman, prompting calls for an urgent investigation.
In detailed statements posted to social media, Suleiman alleged that detainees have been held for extended periods without judicial warrants, cut off from outside contact, and subjected to harsh interrogation techniques. He described incidents of physical abuse, forced nudity, sexual violence, and threats directed at detainees’ families. After his release, Suleiman said he received threats that forced him to flee Marib for his safety.
Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) responded by urging Yemen’s Attorney General and other competent authorities to open an immediate, independent inquiry into the claims. The group stressed that the investigation must meet legal standards, guarantee transparency, and hold perpetrators accountable.
“The protection of Mr. Suleiman, his family, and all others who have testified must be guaranteed,” WJWC said, calling for independent oversight bodies to be granted access to all detention facilities to document violations in accordance with national and international law.
The organization also warned against politicizing human rights cases, cautioning that justice for victims must be pursued through professional legal channels, free from political bias or media sensationalism.
WJWC cited Yemen’s obligations under the Convention Against Torture and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, describing a credible investigation as a “national and moral responsibility.”
It concluded by urging the authorities to treat the case with “the utmost seriousness and transparency” to restore public trust in state institutions and prevent future abuses.
