Condemning Aggression in Port Sudan: A Call for Immediate International Action!

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) expresses its profound concern regarding the alarming surge in military escalation in Port Sudan.

The organization strongly condemns a series of aerial drone strikes that have targeted key civilian infrastructure, including Port Sudan Airport, the city’s primary power station, oil storage facilities, the Coral Hotel, the government guesthouse, and the Flamingo base. These attacks have caused extensive destruction, led to widespread power outages, and disrupted air travel, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.

WJWC denounces these assaults as a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, emphasizing their disproportionate impact on civilians. Port Sudan, currently serving as the de facto seat of Sudan’s government and a refuge for hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons, is facing an increasingly precarious security environment due to the intensifying conflict.

In the political arena, Women Journalists Without Chains is closely monitoring a significant diplomatic rupture, following Sudan’s unprecedented move to accuse the United Arab Emirates of supporting the Rapid Support Forces. This accusation, which resulted in the severance of diplomatic relations, threatens to regionalize the conflict and significantly escalate tensions across the region.

In light of these escalating threats, the organization urgently calls on the international community to fulfill its moral and legal obligations by taking decisive and immediate action. Specifically, Women Journalists Without Chains calls for:

·         A prompt, impartial international investigation to determine the origins of the drone strikes and identify those responsible;

·         An immediate cessation of hostilities by all conflicting parties to avert a deeper humanitarian catastrophe;

·         Robust protection for civilians and the establishment of secure, unrestricted channels for humanitarian assistance;

·         Meaningful international engagement to prevent Sudan from becoming a theater for broader regional conflict.

WJWC warns that the situation in Port Sudan represents a dangerous inflection point, with the potential to spiral into a full-scale regional crisis. It urges world leaders and international institutions to act swiftly and decisively to mitigate further suffering and support the pursuit of peace and stability in Sudan.
