Libya’s Deterrence Force Accused of Atrocities After Hamdan Killing

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) strongly condemns the killing of the young Libyan, Sharaf al-Din Hamdan, who spent eleven years in Deterrence Force prisons at Mitiga Airport without a fair trial.

He was murdered following the leak of videos exposing gross violations inside these secret prisons.

This crime reflects the dangerous transformation of the Deterrence Force into a militia acting above the law, responsible for arbitrary arrests, torture, enforced disappearances, and criminal activities, including drug trafficking. The acknowledgment by its commander, Abdulraouf Kara, of undisclosed secret prisons is a flagrant violation of Libyan and international law, and the treatment Hamdan endured amounts to crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute.

Women Journalists Without Chains calls on the Presidential Council and the Government of National Unity to suspend the Deterrence Force, close its prisons, release all those arbitrarily detained, and refer its members to justice. The organization further urges the United Nations to establish an independent international investigation and refer the case to the International Criminal Court.

The silence of the international community only fuels impunity and threatens Libya’s stability. The blood of Sharaf al-Din Hamdan must serve as a call for justice and a reminder that no future for Libya can be built under secret prisons and militias that commit murder and oppression under the cover of religion.
