Journalist Faces Death Threats in Fight for Justice for Her Father

Journalist Faces Death Threats in Fight for Justice for Her Father

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) has condemned the escalating death threats against journalist Ghadeer Saif al-Sharabi, following the murder of her father, Saif Mahmoud Faraj al-Sharabi, who was killed in front of his family in Taiz on December 30, 2024.

The threats, reportedly aimed at silencing her calls for justice, highlight a growing challenge to press freedom and personal safety in Yemen.

Ghadeer, accompanied by fellow journalists, staged a protest on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, demanding swift action from authorities to apprehend her father’s killer. Speaking at the demonstration, she revealed the intimidation she and her family have faced. "My family and I are being threatened with liquidation to prevent me from pursuing justice for my father’s murder,” she said. Despite the risks, Ghadeer vowed to continue her fight for accountability.

WJWC described the threats as a blatant violation of Ghadeer’s rights and an alarming escalation against journalists. The organization stated, "Such actions not only endanger Ghadeer’s life but also undermine press freedom and expose the fragility of personal safety in Yemen.”

Ghadeer has made several appeals to the authorities, including a direct request to the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, urging immediate intervention. However, the lack of action and the ongoing threats highlight significant security lapses and raise concerns about the government’s ability to protect its citizens.

WJWC called on the Yemeni government and relevant authorities to prioritize Ghadeer’s safety and bring the perpetrator to justice. The organization emphasized that freedom of expression and journalist protection are pillars of democracy, warning that failure to address these threats undermines justice and accountability.

Expressing full solidarity with Ghadeer and her family, WJWC urged immediate measures to safeguard them, ensuring that those responsible for her father’s murder and the subsequent threats are held accountable. The case underscores Yemen’s urgent need for stronger judicial and security systems to protect civilians and uphold the rule of law.
