Sudan: Blood on the Banks of the Nile

Sudan: Blood on the Banks of the Nile
In a new report, Journalists Without Chains revealed widespread violations of human rights and international humanitarian law committed in Sudan since the outbreak of armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023.

The report indicated that the war has resulted in the deaths of thousands and the internal displacement of more than 11 million people. Additionally, over 3.5 million individuals have fled to neighboring countries amid a dire humanitarian crisis.

According to the report, the warring parties have employed unlawful means of warfare, including indiscriminate attacks on civilians that have destroyed residential areas, markets, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions.

The organization documented more than 400 cases of rape, accusing the RSF of using sexual violence and enslavement as tools to spread fear and exert control, particularly in regions such as Darfur and Khartoum.

The report confirmed that the warring parties, particularly the RSF, have committed violations amounting to war crimes, including:

•The use of civilians as human shields.
•Ethnically motivated killings.
•Systematic looting of public and private property, including cultural and heritage sites.

It also highlighted that the war has devastated Sudan’s infrastructure, depriving millions of children of their right to education due to the closure of schools and universities. Furthermore, the healthcare system has collapsed under repeated attacks on medical facilities.

The report placed the majority of the blame on the RSF for these crimes, while criticizing the Sudanese state for failing to protect civilians in accordance with its constitutional and international obligations. In this context, Journalists Without Chains called on the international community to:

•Take urgent action to protect civilians in Sudan.
•Conduct independent investigations to hold perpetrators accountable.
•Impose sanctions on individuals and entities involved in the violations.
•Strengthen the role of the International Criminal Court to ensure justice for victims.

The organization also emphasized the need to support humanitarian efforts and provide urgent aid to displaced people and those affected both within Sudan and in neighboring countries. It warned that if the conflict continues without effective intervention, violations and human suffering will only worsen.
