Trump’s Proposal to Forcibly Relocate Gaza Residents Sparks Global Outrage

Trump’s Proposal to Forcibly Relocate Gaza Residents Sparks Global Outrage

U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his plan to forcibly relocate all Palestinian residents from the Gaza Strip, a move that directly aligns with the objectives of Israeli leaders accused of committing genocide in Gaza.

The announcement, made during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, has triggered widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and global leaders.

Trump described Gaza as a “demolition site" unfit for habitation following Israel’s 15-month-long military campaign, which has left much of the territory in ruins. As a solution, he proposed relocating Gaza’s 2.2 million residents to Egypt and Jordan, while envisioning U.S. control over the territory to transform it into the “Riviera” of the Middle East. His statements disregard international law, particularly Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which explicitly prohibits the forced transfer of civilians from occupied territories.

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) has strongly denounced Trump’s remarks, calling them an endorsement of ethnic cleansing and a blatant violation of international law. The organization pointed out that while the global community is calling for reconstruction efforts and accountability for those responsible for atrocities in Gaza, Trump’s proposal signals further violations of Palestinian rights. Amnesty International has echoed these concerns, urging the U.S. to uphold international law and arrest Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Alignment with Extremist Israeli Officials

Trump’s calls for relocation have emboldened hardline Israeli officials who support the expulsion of Palestinians from their lands. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has pledged to collaborate with Netanyahu on an executive plan to “cleanse” Palestinian territories, while former National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir welcomed Trump’s stance, hailing him as a friend of Israel.

Despite categorical rejections from Egypt and Jordan, Trump has insisted that both countries would comply with his proposal. His administration has repeatedly pressured Arab leaders to accept Gaza residents, presenting it as a trade-off for continued U.S. support. Trump’s alignment with Israeli extremists and his disregard for international law further erode Washington’s credibility on human rights, WJWC warned, arguing that such statements only embolden Israeli violations and double standards in global policy.

A Recycled Proposal Unlikely to Succeed

The forced relocation of Palestinians is not a new concept. In 1955, Israeli authorities, with U.S. and British backing, sought to resettle Palestinians in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, but the plan was ultimately rejected. Similar attempts to push Palestinians into Jordan in the following decades resulted in violent conflicts, most notably the events of September 1970.

For decades, Israel has used military aggression and land confiscation to create conditions of forced displacement in Palestine, yet all efforts to permanently expel the population have failed. The resilience of displaced Palestinians, many of whom have returned to their devastated homes in northern Gaza, signals that any attempt to forcibly remove them will likely face fierce resistance.

WJWC has warned that forced displacement will not bring peace to the region but will instead fuel further violence and instability. The organization cited Article 147 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which classifies forced population transfers as a war crime, and the Rome Statute of the ICC, which defines such acts as crimes against humanity when carried out systematically. Additionally, UN resolutions, including Resolution 194 (1948) and Resolution 242 (1967), affirm the right of Palestinian refugees to return and prohibit territorial acquisition by force.

Calls for Accountability and Justice

Women Journalists Without Chains has urged the international community to take decisive action against violations in Gaza, stating that peace in the region begins with ending the occupation and ensuring Palestinians' right to return to their lands. The organization called on the UN and human rights bodies to condemn any attempts to relocate Gaza’s residents and to deploy international investigators to document crimes committed by Israeli forces over the past 15 months.

Emphasizing the urgency of justice and reconstruction, WJWC asserted that the global community must uphold its legal and moral obligations to protect Palestinian rights, hold those responsible for war crimes accountable, and support the rebuilding of Gaza.
