Tragic End in Jenin: Journalist Al-Sabbagh Killed by Snipers

Palestinian journalist Shatha Al-Sabbagh was killed in Jenin Camp, northern West Bank, on Saturday, December 28, 2024. Shatha, 21, was carrying her sister's children on her way to a nearby grocery store in a fully lit neighborhood free of any clashes or security threats.

Despite this, security snipers directly shot her, according to a statement issued by the family on Sunday.

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) condemned this heinous crime, describing it as a full-fledged crime for which the Palestinian Authority's security forces are responsible. Women Journalists Without Chains highlighted that this incident is part of a series of systematic violations committed by the Palestinian Authority's security forces against civilians in areas under their control. These violations include abduction, murder, torture, and other serious abuses.

The Palestinian Authority's security forces have been conducting a security campaign in Jenin Camp for the fourth week, claiming to pursue wanted individuals. Since the campaign began, Women Journalists Without Chains has documented the killing of five civilians, including two children, in the camp by the security forces' bullets.

Musab Al-Sabbagh, Shatha's brother, recounted that neighborhood residents rushed out upon hearing gunfire and children's screams. "They pleaded with the security officer to cease fire so they could help Shatha after confirming she was hit, but he ignored them and continued shooting for 15 minutes."

Shatha Al-Sabbagh, a student studying digital media at Al-Quds Open University, worked as a freelance journalist for multiple local news organizations. She reported on some of the wrongdoings by the Palestinian Authority's security personnel and talked to the mothers of those who were killed while fighting for their cause.

Shortly after her death, the media released a statement from the Palestinian security forces' spokeswoman, alleging that journalist Shatha Al-Sabbagh "was killed by bullets from outlaws."

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate stated that it is following up with all official, civil, and family entities on the martyrdom of journalism student Shatha Al-Sabbagh in order to disclose the results of the investigation. The syndicate emphasized that the Attorney General authorized an official inquiry into the case, which began with an autopsy of the martyr's body in front of a family representative, followed by the collection of statements from all parties and the gathering of forensic evidence.

According to eyewitnesses, security personnel are present in the neighborhood where the Al-Sabbagh family resides, and security snipers are stationed in high-rise buildings. The Al-Sabbagh family confirms that security officers were responsible for their daughter's death.

According to Women Journalists Without Chains, the security forces of the Palestinian Authority are perpetrating grave abuses in Jenin Camp, while crimes of genocide are taking place in Gaza and Israel has killed over 200 journalists working there. These transgressions by the forces tasked with protecting civilians and upholding their rights are regrettable.

In addition to calling for an immediate investigation into the crime of targeting Shatha Al-Sabbagh and all other civilians who have been subjected to violations, Women Journalists Without Chains affirms its solidarity with the family of journalist Shatha Al-Sabbagh and urges that those responsible be held accountable as soon as possible.
