The human rights organization Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) has renewed its condemnation of the Houthi militia’s ongoing detention and enforced disappearance of prominent lawyer and human rights defender Abdulmajid Sabra, abducted from his office in Sanaa on September 25.
Sabra’s family reported receiving a brief phone call in which he confirmed he has been held for two months without legal proceedings. Requests for visitation were rejected outright, leaving him in complete isolation. WJWC said this reflects not only violations of Sabra’s rights but also a broader assault on the legal protections afforded to lawyers and human rights defenders.
The organization warned that Sabra’s arbitrary detention threatens his life and fundamental rights, while also worsening the plight of detainees he had been representing. Without his advocacy, those prisoners are left exposed to serious abuses and denied legal protection, underscoring what WJWC described as a systematic campaign to silence civil society.
WJWC demanded Sabra’s immediate and unconditional release, holding the Houthi militia fully responsible for his safety. The group urged the United Nations, international community, and relevant UN mechanisms — including the Special Envoy to Yemen — to act swiftly to secure his freedom, protect his rights, and ensure accountability for those responsible.
