Armed members of the Houthi militia abducted prominent human rights lawyer Abdulmajid Sabra on Thursday, September 25, 2025, after storming his office in Sana’a’s Shumaila district.
The assailants reportedly confiscated his personal belongings before taking him to an undisclosed location. The incident marks a dangerous escalation in the ongoing campaign of repression targeting activists and human rights defenders in areas under Houthi control.
The abduction is particularly alarming given Sabra’s long-standing reputation for defending detainees and victims of arbitrary imprisonment, including journalists prosecuted for their professional and human rights work.
Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) strongly condemned the abduction, describing it as a grave violation of Sabra’s legal protections under Yemeni law and international standards that guarantee the safety of lawyers and human rights defenders.
WJWC called for the immediate and unconditional release of Abdulmajid Sabra and demanded an end to systematic repression against lawyers, activists, and journalists. The organization urged the United Nations and the international community to intervene swiftly to ensure Sabra’s safety and to uphold fundamental protections for human rights defenders across Yemen.
