Houthi militia attacks journalists while protesting over unpaid wages

The Houthi militia on Wednesday resorted to violence to break up a group of journalists coming together to protest over their unpaid wages next to their work place in the rebel-held capital Sana’a

.According to the assaulted protestors working for the militia-controlled official institution (Al-Thawrah) for journalism and printing, the Houthi militia fired real bullets in the air and used force to quell the protests held to demand overdue salaries.

They pointed out that dozens of pro-Houthi private security forces and national security elements have been stationed near the gate of the institution since this afternoon, and they prevent the participants of the morning protest into it and threaten to arrest them.

The protesters demanding advance payment of their monthly salaries being delayed for five months said the militia-appointed head of the institution Mohammed Mansour threatened to arrest them and branded them as mercenaries and enemy collaborators

A state of discontent and anger prevailed among al-Thawrah’s staff after they found out that the foundation’s revenues haven’t been transferred to the central bank, but have been retained by the leadership, said a source in al-Thawrah.

Based on the same source, the pro-Houthi head has sent letters to different government bodies asking them to pay advertising fees and monthly subscriptions in cash or make cheques payable to treasurers.

The Aden-based legitimate government on last Sunday had directed to pay salaries of the whole staff of Al-Thawrah institution in Yemen’s Houthi-held capital Sana’a .

The Yemeni capital Sanaa is living a state of tension after a popular uprising has loomed on the horizon against the backdrop of delayed salaries.

The Iran-affiliated Houthi group has resorted to meeting any protests with violence and security and military force as well as throwing accusations of treason, threatening protesters with arrest, and it had managed to crush earlier protests by employees.
