WJWC Condemns Detention of Yemeni Journalist Al-Samdi

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) strongly condemns the arbitrary detention of Mujali Al-Samdi, Executive Director of Voice of Yemen Radio, in Taiz Governorate Security Prison on August 18, 2024.

This latest incident follows a pattern of harassment and intimidation previously inflicted upon Al-Samdi and his radio station by the Houthi militia in Sana'a, forcing him to flee the capital earlier this year.

WJWC views Al-Samdi's detention in Taiz as a stark reminder of the consistent hostility toward press freedom displayed by all parties involved in the Yemeni conflict. This blatant disregard for journalistic independence and the right to free expression is unacceptable.

WJWC demands the immediate and unconditional release of Al-Samdi and calls upon the relevant authorities in Taiz Governorate to ensure a safe environment for all media professionals and journalists. The organization holds the security services responsible for any harm that may befall Al-Samdi during his detention.

WJWC stands in unwavering solidarity with journalist Mujali Al-Samdi and urges all human rights and civil society organizations to join us in condemning these violations.  The ongoing assault on press freedom in Yemen must be addressed with urgency and resolve.
