Yemeni Journalist wins Rory Peck Award 2016

Yemeni video journalist Nabil Hassan today was rewarded the Rory Peck Award for his work in Yemen covering fighting between Shiite Houthi rebels and government forces.

AFP's global news director Michele Leridon handed the colleague Hassan the award on behalf of London-based Rory Peck Trust in the presence of a number of journalists.

Nabil Hassan, who has freelanced for AFP since 2015, was named among this year’s news category finalists for his coverage of the Battle for Aden in which Shiite Houthi rebels opposed pro-government forces.

The second shortlisted colleague nicknamed Al Qu'aiti said: "I am very happy with this win, which was a fruit of a sustained hard work during the war,” adding, “This is an incentive to make more effort at covering and reporting events with professionalism and objectivity."

It should be noted that Al Qu'aiti, who was qualified for the final stage of the Rory Peck Award, was unable to attend the award ceremony taken place on Wednesday 7th December in London as he was participating in a training course in AFP’s headquarters in Paris about the filming during conflicts.

On last Wednesday in London, the Rory Peck Trust announced the finalists of the Rory Peck Awards 2016, which honour the work of freelance cameramen and camerawomen in news and current affairs.

The Rory Peck Awards were launched in 1995 by the Rory Peck Trust, set up in the memory of freelance journalist Rory Peck who was killed in Moscow in 1993.

The awards recognize the best independent news cameramen, and the awards ceremony is one of the main events through which the Trust raises funds to assist freelance journalists.
