New York – Human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman, president of Women Journalists Without Chains, participated in a high-level event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York,
held at the invitation of Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The gathering brought together world leaders and international figures to discuss pressing global challenges and pathways to peace.
In her address, Karman praised the Bangladeshi people and their historic liberation revolution, noting that the sacrifices of freedom fighters laid the foundation for the nation’s independence and democratic governance. She also highlighted the pioneering work of Muhammad Yunus, emphasizing how his initiatives in microfinance and social entrepreneurship have promoted social change, advanced justice, and empowered millions worldwide.
Turning to global issues, Karman stressed the urgent challenges facing the world today, including climate change, armed conflicts, and rising poverty. She called for strengthened multilateral cooperation and collective action to advance peace and justice. Highlighting the role of social entrepreneurship, she emphasized the importance of balancing economic sustainability with humanitarian objectives to build inclusive and resilient societies.
Concluding her remarks, Karman addressed the situation in Palestine, declaring that “there is no cause more just today than the Palestinian cause.” She condemned ongoing massacres and acts of ethnic cleansing, urging the international community to take immediate action to stop the violence, hold perpetrators accountable, and guarantee Palestinians the right to establish a free and independent state.
