WJWC denounces incitement against branch head of Yemeni Syndicate of Journalists in Aden

The branch head of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate in Aden, Mahmoud Thabet, is subjected to a campaign of incitement and defamation with the aim of undermining his life and exposing him to serious threat after news websites and social media pages have recently shared accusations of his alleged communication with external parties, loyalty to the Houthi militia and work for parties harming the interests of journalists.

According to the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS), the incitement against its branch head coincided with the storming of the headquarters of the branch of the Syndicate by members of the Aden Security Belt Militia late last month.

In the face of this incitement, Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) renews its strong condemnation and denunciation of the separatist Southern Transitional Council’s militia for such dangerous practices against journalists, professional and union leaders and media institutions in Aden.

The WJWC also expresses its absolute solidarity with the branch head of YJS in Aden, Mahmoud Thabet, as well as with all journalists and media professionals in Aden, against the repression and extremely dangerous risks to them while working in an inappropriate media environment, and holds Aden's relevant authorities in Aden fully accountable for Thabet's safety.

The Yemeni press freedom advocate also calls on all human rights and civil organizations and defenders of freedoms around the world to stand in solidarity with Mr. Thabet, and with all journalists and media workers who are subject to grave violations aimed at restricting press freedoms in Yemen.

In the same context, the WJWC reiterates its solidarity with journalist Ahmed Maher abducted and subjected to the continued physical and psychological torture in the jails of the STC militia in Aden since his arrest on August.
