A year and a half after his arrest, the Cairo Criminal Court has renewed the detention of journalist Tawfiq Ghanem on Monday, October 10, for 45 days, according to the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms.
Tawfiq Ghanem has been subjected to numerous abuses inside his cell - in Tora prison - including the renewal of pre-trial detention without appearing before the prosecution or meeting his lawyer, as well as not providing him with the necessary medical care, especially since he is elderly, diabetic and suffers from chronic diseases, stated the Egyptian commission.
Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) condemns “the renewed detention of 66-year-old journalist Tawfiq Ghanem and calls for his immediate release, stressing that his stay behind bars is unjustified and he should not have been arrested for his media work."
Earlier this year, Amnesty International revealed that Ghanem was being denied access to adequate healthcare despite his bad health, as well as being arrested in poor conditions of detention.
The Egyptian security forces detained Ghanem on 22 May 2021 from his home in connection with his opinions and because of his journalistic work as the Director of the regional office of the Turkish Anadolu Agency in Egypt, despite the fact that he quitted his job and serving as a journalist in 2015.
