UNESCO urges to improve safety of Yemeni journalists

The United nation agency, UNESCO, today condemned the killing of Yemeni journalist, Awab Al Zubairi, in a landmine explosion in the southwestern city of Taiz, calling for measures to improve the safety of journalists in Yemen.

In a press statement issued, the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, said, “It is the duty of all parties to recognize and respect the civilian status of media workers and ensure their safety in all circumstances, including in times of conflict.”

“The work and commitment of media workers in providing information to the public is particularly vital in times of conflict and instability,” Ms. Bovoka added.

Awab Al-Zubairi, a photographer working for Taiz News Network, was killed in an explosion of a residential building booby trapped by the militia of Iran-backed Houthis allied with ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh in a neighborhood, east of Taiz province on 18 November 2016.
