Saudi Journalist Mufti Missing for Months, Rights Group Demands Answers

Saudi journalist and blogger Hassan Mufti has been missing since May, with no official word on his whereabouts. Despite no charges being filed against him, Mufti is believed to have been forcibly disappeared by Saudi authorities.

His case has raised concerns among rights groups, as he is not known for outspoken criticism of the government.

Mufti, who has more than 51,000 followers on the X platform, is among several journalists and digital influencers targeted in the Kingdom’s widening crackdown on public discourse. Even those who do not directly criticize officials have been subjected to harassment, detention, and enforced disappearance. Sources familiar with the country’s detention system warn that political prisoners often face mistreatment and torture before undergoing trials that lack basic judicial fairness.

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) has condemned Mufti’s disappearance and is calling for his immediate release, along with all prisoners of conscience in Saudi Arabia. The organization is demanding that authorities disclose Mufti’s location, allow him to contact his family, and clarify any charges against him. They also stress the importance of legal representation to ensure due process.

In addition, WJWC has urged the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances to intervene. The group is pushing for international access to Saudi Arabia’s secret prisons and detention facilities to assess conditions.
