Radio Sawa’s correspondent and London-based Asharq al-Awsat’s reporter, Arafat Mudabesh, on Thursday was rewarded the 2016 David Burke Distinguished Journalism Award.
The USA-based Broadcasting Board of Governors named the colleague Arafat Mudabesh among the recipients of this year as a recognition of his dedication to the advancement of the cause of freedom and democracy through free exchange of ideas as exhibited by his original work.
In an award ceremony held on Thursday in Washington, D.C., US Radio Sawa received the prize on behalf of the Yemeni journalist, who has been working for them for 14 years.
Mudabesh hailing from Yemen’s western port city of Hodeida began his journalism career 25 years ago working for Al Thawri newspapers, the mouthpiece of Yemeni Socialist Party, and Al Wahdah newspaper issued by the governmental Al Thawra media foundation. After that, he moved to the capital, Sana’a, to work from there.
The journalist, Mudabesh, has had accumulated experiences after a long journey of hard work in the field of journalism, as he worked for many regional newspaper such as UAE Al Ittihad and Arab News newspapers, the Algerian Assiasialarabi newspaper and the Arab Observer.
Named in honor of David W. Burke, the founding chairman and leader of the BBG for its first three years, the award is presented annually to U.S. international broadcasters who demonstrate exceptional performances, including bravery and extreme hardship.
The amount of the award is $2,500. The 2016 David Burke Awards mark the 15th year the awards have been given.
