Armed group detains Belqees’ team in Taiz and threatens to liquidate members

Two-man team of Belqees TV, Hamza Ameen and Majd Addeen Salem were arrested and received threats of imprisonment and physical liquidation by an armed group being stationed at the Revolution Hospital in province of Taiz, Belqees TV reported.

In a press statement, Yemeni Istanbul-based TV stated that its two members have been threatened with death after a press conference held by doctors at the hospital on Thursday, explaining that elements of the group took colleagues at gunpoint to the so-called emir of the group who in turn threatened them with imprisonment and murder before they were released.

It also pointed out to the assassination attempt against the channel’s correspondent, Fawaz Al Hammadi, who works in the countryside of province, in Assilw district, when a sniper tried to shoot him while covering fighting in the area, noting that Al Hammadi has been subjected to attempted murder for the second time.

According to the TV’s statement, the journalist had been about to lose his life earlier this month, when militiamen belonging to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh and Houthi group targeted his location with mortar shell, and he was wounded with shrapnel while his tools were damaged.

Yemeni satellite channel expressed concerns about systematic methods followed to target its crew in the field through sniping, arresting and threatening with chase, adding that such misconduct “raises our fears and deep concern for lives of our colleagues and profound impact on their performance”.
