Activist in Aden shot dead by unknown gunmen

A young activist was killed yesterday evening by unknown gunmen in Yemen’s temporarily capital, Aden.

Local sources have reported that unknown militants killed the young activist, Amjad Abdulrahman Mohammed, after they stormed an Internet cafe in the city of Sheikh Osman, opening fire on him, and then run away.

Amjad used to engage in political and cultural activities and run a cultural center he founded a while ago in the port city of Aden.

According to the sources, the gunmen fired a barrage of bullets at Amjad in the head and neck, and this has been evidenced by a picture of the victim shared by activists on social media.

Friends of the dead activist have suggested that the murder incident may be related to his intellectual and political activity, and that extremist groups are likely behind the operation.

The port city of Aden is witnessing security chaos and the spread of militants in the streets due to the inability of the city’s security authorities to take full control of the situation, although nearly two years have passed since Aden was liberated from the Houthi militia and forces loyal to ousted president Saleh, which had taken it over in the first half of 2015.
