Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) has called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Journalist Mohamed Abdu Al Absi, who died on Tuesday in mysterious conditions in Yemen’s Houthi-held capital, Sanaa.
The council member of YJS, Nabil Al Osaidi, told Yemen’s Riyadh-based official news agency (Saba) that YJS does not rule out that Al Absi was assassinated, especially since strong suspicions emerged following the sudden death of the YJS member known for revealing many corruption cases.
Al Osaidi called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to participate in an autopsy and conduct an independent investigation away from the intervention of the coup militias, adding that it would be a great idea if the corpse is transferred abroad to ensure the credibility of autopsy results.
Al Absi died only hours after he, along with his cousin, was taken to hospital in the aftermath of having dinner in a restaurant in Sanaa; his companion is still in intensive care unit.
The family of the deceased has announced the postponement of the funeral until after the autopsy.
For its part, Yemeni Ministry of Information has called on the United Nations and ICRC to quickly intervene to transfer the body of Yemen’s only investigative journalist to the southern port city of Aden where the autopsy should be done.
In a statement issued yesterday, the ministry pointed out that Al Absi who was serving at one of the ministry's institutions before the coup, was working in recent days on investigative reports on serious issues having to do with documents against the coup, especially those related to oil and arms trade.
